Maybe it’s fall!!  I wouldn’t bet on it just yet but the weather has cooled and there is that feel of fall in the air.  A couple of rain showers lately have been enough to help the dry conditions but not so much to muddy the river.  The water is low and clear.
I just got back from a week’s trip to New York to visit one of my sons who lives in New York City.  While I was there we spent three days in Woodstock, New York and I fished one morning on the Esopus Creek, in the Catskill Mountains, with very little success.  The water was stained and I caught a couple of small trout in two hours fishing.  Not being familiar with the river, I’m not sure if this is good or bad, but in all honesty I’ll take the Little Red any day!  Although catching fish is always good, I enjoyed seeing the area and wading the stream. It always amazes me that a short drive out of New York City and you can be in an area much like our Ozark Mountains with trout streams and on a morning hike to a picturesque water fall, our group encountered a black bear.  It watched us….we watched it……and we all went our separate ways.
After returning from my trip on Monday, I wade fished Wednesday afternoon and caught several nice rainbows and a couple of browns, one of which was about 18”.  The fish were mostly taking midge pupas but when I got below a large group of geese that were feeding on the moss in the river, the bite switched to sow bugs.  Sometimes feeding geese will shake the sow bugs loose from the moss and the fish will feed below on the drifting insects.
With the good water conditions and nice weather, the fishing should be good this fall.  If that fall fishing trip is on your mind, contact me to book your trip.
