The brown trout finally decided the time was right and the spawn should begin. They started moving last week and this past weekend they were really moving. Redds began to appear on the shoal and the spawning activity began in earnest. Sunday was a great day with my 2 fishermen landing 20 browns over 17”, with the largest measuring 21”, during a half day morning trip. Rainbows are also still on the shoals, some trying to spawn and others just feasting on the brown eggs.
The spawn will likely peak this weekend and begin to taper off next week. Of the browns I caught on Tuesday, several of the females had already spawned. This is an indication that the spawn is at the midway point. Please use good wading habits and watch for the redds (a large or small spot on the bottom where the gravel will be clean and shining). This is the spot where the eggs are deposited and will be resting until the hatch in the coming months. Disturbing these areas destroys the eggs!
Fishing is good and the December weather is good. What else could a fisherman ask for? The river remains low and the water clarity is good. Clear on the shoals and slightly colored in the deeper sections.
If you are wondering what to get that fly fisher on your Christmas list, you might consider a guided fishing trip on the Little Red. There is still time to take care of this great gift. Just give me a call at 501-690-9166 this weekend and I’ll take care of the details.
Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas!!
Good Fishing!!
