Well we survived a flash flood last Thursday night. The river received 4 inches of rain in four hours and they were running 2 full units. This caused the height of the river to be about 5 feet above the normal 2 units of water and extremely muddy. The good news is most of the rainfall was below the watershed of the lake so the lake did not rise much at all.
This rain event caused the Corp to cut back generation to a 12 hour schedule to relieve flooding in the lower river and White River. Fishing has been fair to good by staying ahead of the generation and drift fishing. The river was still dingy but clearing and the fish were able to find large nymphs (size 12 and 14) and San-Juan worms. The river is clearing today, but as I write this report, it is raining again so we will have to wait and see what tomorrow brings.
The generation will be about the same tomorrow with a reduction starting Wednesday to one unit around the clock or less depending on the regulating gauge at Georgetown which will be lowered to 16 feet (from 21 ft.). Drift fishing should be good if the river remains clear to slightly colored, but wade fishing will be limited by the generation. Check the daily generation schedule (USACE Little Rock…App for cell phone) for any shut down periods on the generation which will allow wading. The lake level is 464.25 with normal level being 462.04.
Good Fishing!!
