I took off a few days due to the cold weather and the need to get caught up on some holiday chores. When I went back on the river on Friday the fishing was pretty good all day with the best bite coming between noon and 3:00 pm. It was a good day catching rainbows, mostly in the 12 to 14 inch range, in the deeper pools. We tried wading a couple of shoals without much success. When we were finishing our day, we were drifting in about 4 feet of water when my client caught a 22 inch, fat rainbow. A great way to end the day. It's always great to catch a big fish. The amazing thing is that it usually is caught doing the same thing as you are doing to catch the normal size rainbows. Just presenting your fly at the right time and in the right way with just a little luck pays off.
The weather is looking good for the period before Christmas with highs in the 40's and 50's and lows in upper 20's and 30's. This makes for good winter fishing. Bundle up and give it a try.
I went out today and caught several rainbows and 6 browns wade fishing a shoal. Nice fish in the 14 to 16 inch range with 2 of the browns still full of eggs. It has been a strange year trying to figure the browns. If you pick the right day, you will still find some browns on the shoals. All the fish were caught on sow bugs (dark tan) and midge pupas. There was a midge hatch with some large midges coming off in the afternoon.
I hope everyone has a safe and Merry Christmas with friends and family. May you all remember the true meaning of Christmas and give thanks for all the things we sometimes take for granted. I'm looking forward to the coming year and have been blessed with a good 2010.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Good Fishing!!
